Founded by the Tjimur Dance Theatre, the Tjimur Arts Festival (TAF), which focuses on the culture of Indigenous people and their communities, has been organized around different themes since 2018. As a micro art festival about supporting the sustainability of Indigenous culture, TAF serves as a platform for exchanges among those within and outside of the community.
With an artistic mindset and methodology and through the curation, artist residencies, the on-site production of artistic projects, guided tours by local habitants in the community, and participatory activities, we break down the identity boundaries between the artists and attendees that are usually associated with watching (and being watched), performance, everyday life, artistic creation, and participation. We are creating new and different perspectives of cultural identities, more importantly, we curate, produce and execute by our own with the governmental subsidy from time to time. We aim at making the TAF as an artistic-based experimentation for, cross reference with, and empowerment of the self.
For the 5th edition of the TAF, the open-studio aims at giving an access for all to learn the first thoughts and practices about artistic projects from the arts makers. After their ten-day residency in Timur, the artists who are from India, Indonesia and Thailand will share what they have been experienced and inspired through this residency to reflect the challenges and to explore the possibilities of co-existing between traditional culture and contemporary life.
